Jon Delaney is a jazz guitarist living and working in Melbourne, Australia. He performs regularly in and around Melbourne, around Australia, and on occassion, around the world. He holds degrees in Music and Arts from Monash and Melbourne universities, and the Victorian College of the Arts, and plays in several bands in clubs, bars, hotels, at festivals, special events, weddings, and wherever else will have him. Jon studied modern jazz improvisation and composition at the Victorian College of the Arts (Mmus 2005), and at the moment, aside from many casual gigs, plays electric jazz guitar with Delaney/Gilmartin/Lee - the primary outlet for his original compositions - the Louisa Rankin Band, and occassionally in the Jon Delaney Trio, with which he recorded the live album "7/10" in 2006. More recently, Jon has been focussing his attention on the Gypsy Jazz of Django Reinhardt, and runs "La Mauvaise Reputation", a band playing and singing the songs of 20s and 30s Paris in their original French. He also performs with Melbourne band "Bois et Charbon", Peter Baylor's "Ultrafox", and Mark Twigden's "Balajo" on a regular basis, and with a few other Melbourne based Jazz Manouche projects here and there, as well as playing many solo guitar gigs around the place. Jon takes inspiration from many different musical sources. In the playlist at the moment are Jim Hall, Tchavolo Schmitt, Fapy Lafertin, Kurt Rosenwinkel, J.S.Bach, Glenn Gould, Django Reinhardt, Jean Sablon, Yves Montand, Brad Mehldau, Ben Monder, Angelo Debarre, Chris Thile, Laura Veirs, Gonzalo Bergara, Ran Blake/Jeanne Lee, Locas in Love, Gus Viseur, and lots of others. He has also written two theses, "Jim Hall Live!: a study of improvised group interaction", and "In Search of a History: Selection and Performance of the Keyboard Works of J.S.Bach for Pick-style Guitar and Bass Duo" for his Honours and Masters degrees respectively, and leads an on again/off again electric guitar quartet playing Bach's Art of Fugue. |
